Chemical Biology Program, Chulabhorn Graduate Institute

chembiol11.jpg In order to address the urgent need to develop well-qualified research scientists in a multidisciplinary field between chemistry and biology, Chemical Biology Program has been established at the Chulabhorn Graduate Institute. Some of our current Ph.D. staffs have participated in the Chemical Biology Program as core curriculum members and have actively produced highly motivated graduates at both the Master’s and doctor of philosophy levels to lead research teams to tackle the research problems at the interface between chemistry and biology, especially in drug discovery and development.

Thai Research Experience for Undergraduates in Organic Chemistry (ThaiREU)

thaireu4.jpg In order to promote undergraduate research in organic chemistry in Thailand, we have initiated a collaborative joint research program fully supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) since 2002. As a core institution for this ThaiREU project, along with Chulalongkorn University, Mahidol University, and Kasetsart University, we have successfully fostered a unique atmosphere conducive not only for research but also for cultural exchanges among Thai and American students. In addition, both Thai and American students have benefited enormously from the program both on the interpersonal and professional levels.

JSPS Asian CORE Program (ACP): New Phase of Cutting-Edge Organic Chemistry in Asia

acp_member_countries_artistic.jpg Initiatives by coordinators in Japan, Korea, China, Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia have productively created a unique forum to exchange scientific advancements, showcase highly innovative research work, and stimulate the development of research scientists in organic chemistry and related fields. Some of our Ph.D. staffs have served as the country coordinator and the general secretary for the program. Main activities of the program include annual conferences, lectureship awards, and research exchanges. Moreover, some bilateral collaborations among the member countries/regions such as Thailand-China and Thailand-Taiwan have flourished as a result of this highly regarded international program.

JSPS-NRCT Core University Program

The Core University Program was launched by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) in 1978 in order to promote scientific exchanges with Asian countries. Under this program, the University of Toyama and Chulalongkorn University were originally designated as the core universities for the “NRCT-JSPS Core University Exchange System on Pharmaceutical Sciences” on the topic of Natural Medicines since 1990. In the second phase of this project during 2001-2010, Chulabhorn Research Institute was appointed as a co-core institution for this program. Since then, a number of scientists in the Laboratory of Medicinal Chemistry actively participated in this project as visiting scientists in laboratories in Japanese universities to develop basic technology and to discover lead compounds by investigating chemical and biological features of natural products. However, in 2010, an agreement to discontinue the program was reached by both the JSPS and the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT).
