Proteins are the instruments through which the genetic potential of an organism is expressed. Although the sequence of the human genome offers a molecular blueprint of an organism, this information is not enough to provide detailed knowledge of how living organisms function, since the information in DNA has to be expressed through the synthesis of polypeptide chains, which may be further modified, such as by glycosylation or cleavage. Polypeptide chains must also fold to give the three-dimensional structure of the protein, which is what determines its action. We have been interested in protein structure and function for many years, and are presently interested in the changes in proteins in genetic diseases and in cancer. We have also become interested in searching for anti-cancer agents from medicinal plants, and studying how they affect the protein patterns of affected cells. Researchers in the Laboratory of Biochemistry have received various awards, such as the Outstanding Scientist of Thailand Award from the Foundation for the Promotion of Science and Technology, the Outstanding Researcher Award, Chemical Sciences and Pharmacy Section from the National Research Council of Thailand, and the Senior Research Scholar Award from the Thailand Research Fund.
