Professor Dr. Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn, President of the Chulabhorn Research Institute, visited Canada from 7 to 20 May 2010.
Her Royal Highness was invited by the Director of the British Columbia Cancer Agency in Vancouver, British Colombia, Canada, to observe the research and academic activities of the Centre.
British Columbia Cancer Agency, Vancouver Centre , is an organization that provides a comprehensive provincial program of cancer control and health care delivery in British Columbia. The research ranges from basic molecular and genetic studies to epidemiological and clinical research on cancer prevention, early diagnosis, molecular characteristics of the cancer process and new treatments for cancer using drugs and radiotherapy.
After the BC Cancer Agency, Her Royal Highness proceeded to the Faculty of Chemistry, British Columbia University, to observe the research and development work on natural marine products.
The University of British Columbia, established in 1908, educates a student population of 50,000 on major campuses in two cities, Vancouver and Kelowna, and holds an international reputation for excellence in advanced research and learning. The Vancouver campus boasts some of the city’s best attractions, including the Museum of Anthropology, the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, and the UBC Botanical Garden and Centre for Plant Research.
Her Royal Highness has been very concerned about the effects of marine resource degradation on the universal food chain and human health, and therefore determined to solve sustainably the problem. So her next visit was the renowned Island Scallops [http://www.islandscallops.com/], a marine research centre. Island Scallops is Canada’s largest private marine hatchery and first fully-integrated cultured shellfish and marine fish producer. The Centre specializes in shellfish and marine fish species new to aquaculture, and offers a variety of research services and commercial products, including aquaculture research and development as well as custom seafood processing and marketing.
Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn departed from Suvarnnabhumi Airport on Friday, May 7th, 2010, at 10.20 hours, aboard the Cathay Pacific Airways flight CX708 and returned by the same airline on the CX701 flight on Thursday, May 20th, 2010, at 17.30 hours.
