Chulabhorn Pattana VIII Project is
situated in Prupi, Surat Thani Preliminary
survey indicated that this area has been severly
deforested. Chulabhorn Research Institute has
decided to implement an extensive
reforestation program.
The initial planning stages of the
program focused on three reforestation
procedures. These three procedures were
alternatively used depending on the particular
local conditions. First procedure involved
terrace planting of trees. This method secures
the soil and prevents the soil from washing
away during heavy rains. The local villagers
were trained in this method and encouraged to
implement the procedure immediately. The
second method of reforestation involved aerial
seeding. This was accomplished by remote
aircraft which drop the seedings onto the area
to be reforested. The third procedure used
rockets, to fire seed packets into cracks on
mountainous area to be reforested.
The objective of this project is to
restore the local environment and encourage
tourism activitiesin the area. A camping
ground and housing for tourists have been
built. An extensive tourism campaign is being
implemented.
It this expected the project area will be new tourist attraction place since it is surrounded by a unique scenery and car easily access to other local tourist sites.
