Training for Quality of Life Improvement Project
Villagers in Red Sapphire and Chulabhorn Pattana Villages were given land for housing and farming in order to earn their living. Most of the villagers grow kitchen gardens and fruit trees within their compounds, besides growing rice and field crops. At present, their crops are facing problems in form of diseases, insects, chemical accumulation, and high production cost. There is also a problem arising from repeating used of chemical fertilizers and insecticides. It has effect not only to the soil and crops which resulting in low production and higher cost, but also deteriorate the fragile ecological system.
Utilizing agriculture leftovers, pruning fruit trees, making bio-extracts, practice integrated farming according to the New Theory concept, and making natural pesticides are alternative approaches that can solve such problems.
Result of the operation
Chulabhorn Research Institute, in collaboration with specialists from Kasetsart University, made a survey on the availability of raw material in each area. Then members were selected form the villagers to undergo training. Demonstration of each activity was conducted while the villagers were provided with material for the training. At present, 831 villagers from Red Sapphire 03 and 05 Village, Sa Kaew Province, Red Sapphire 06 and 07 Village, Si Sa Ket Province, Chulabhorn Pattana 1-4 Village, Chulabhorn Pattana 9-11 Village Yala Province, and Chulabhorn Pattana 5 and 12 Village, Narathiwat Province, have been trained.
