Chulabhorn 36 Marine Park
Chulabhorn 36 Marine Park Project has been in operation since 1993. It’s main objectives are to honor Professor Dr. H.R.H. Princess Chulabhorn on the occasion of her third cycle birthday anniversary. And to conserve marine resources, especially coral, marine flora and fauna, as well as natural environment on Similan Islands, Surin Islands, Bon Iland, and Ta Chai Island, where a beautiful world-class coral reef exists, to retain their fertile conditions and natural balance.
Professor Dr. H.R.H. Princess Chulabhorn, President of Chulabhorn Research Institute, has accepted the Chulabhorn 36 Marine Park Project as a project of the institute. In order to achieve objectives of the project, and administrative committee and organizing committee were appointed to run its operation together with other involved agencies, namely Royal Thai Navy, Department of Fisheries, Royal Forest Department, Office of Environmental Policy and Planning, Tourism Authority of Thailand, Office of the Royal Development Projects Board, and Chulabhorn Research Institute. The Royal Thai Navy has set up Chulabhorn Marine Park Project Conservation Center in Phang-nga Province, as the center of operations and provide information and knowledge for visitors so that they can learn the proper way to make a sea trip. The center also serves as an assembling place for tourists who wish to visit the Similan and Surin Islands Natural Parks.
Result of the operation
The Chulabhorn 36 Marine Park Project has been fixing and laying out buoys for boats, in order to prevent anchor casting, which can destroy the coral. In the Simalan and Surin Islans and nearby area in the Andaman Sea, the project has carrived out this activity since 1995, averaging 1995, averaging 300 buoys annually.
In order to promote an awareness on conservation, a Diving for Marine Conservation course was set up. Eight classes of trainees consisting of general public, Students, and personnel from government agencies have completed the course. At present, there are 194 divers for marine conservation in the Chulabhorn 36 Marine Park Project. Each year, these trained divers are responsible for fixing and laying buoys along the coral reef in collaboration with the Chulabhorn 36 Marine Park Project.
A Coral Conservation Youth Camp to instill and awareness of the importance of marine life for youth is organized during the summer holidays for children 12-18 years old from schools in Phang-nga and nearby provinces, together with children of naval personnel. Two batched of 300 children have undergone the training course, The children were trained to dive using snorkel and had direct contact with nature under the sea, resulting in having a better knowledge of marine flora and fauna, which makes them love and eager to protect marine resources.
Moreover, the project has issued a manual entitled “Flora and Fauna along the Coral Reef” to disseminate knowledge about marine natural resources. Coral reef navigation maps were also made so that marine resources in places like the Surin, Simalan, and Tarutao Islands National Park would not be destroyed.
